Needless to say, he had to learn the basics and had the attention span that one would expect out of a four year old.  But when the games got started, I was reminded of some very basic concepts of success. Sometimes people become successful through sheer luck; however, don’t count on this – it’s a rarity at best. The…

In Sickness and in Health…Till Death Do Us Part – Dr. Pamela Marzban

One of the biggest reasons I became a dentist is because I wanted a career where I could connect with people and help them with their overall well-being.   I never realized the extent of how that would end up impacting my life and how priceless that is to me.  I am a fee for service, sole practitioner that’s been in private practice for over 16 years.  I have seen my pediatric patients grow up, go to college, start careers, get…

Let’s face it…owning a business has many challenges.  Through the years, I have found that attaining the right skills to be a strong leader is top of that list.  How you carry yourself in your office will be mirrored by your team and will ultimately become the image of your practice.  This idea may be a hard to accept for some of us…but nonetheless, it is true. Creating a Culture of Possibility – Libby Gill

The most significant – and often overlooked – element in the workplace today, hope is the critical component that drives success. There’s an old joke… “If you’re leading and nobody’s following, maybe you’re just taking a walk.” So what are those elusive qualities of leadership that create the kind of engaged and collaborative followship that drives high performance? That’s a question that has been discussed and debated by everyone from Alexander the Great to Jack Welch. I believe that there…

You don’t always need a formal 360 Assessment to see how others see you. Try this simple strategy to determine other’s perceptions of you… When I was heading public relations for one of the entertainment studios, I hired a talented woman I’ll call Victoria. She had an Ivy League education, impeccable references and an impressive résumé. Victoria had only been on board about a month when my staff discovered that it was her birthday. A lively mix of marketing and…

Pulitzer Prize winning American novelist Ellen Glasgow wrote, “The only difference between a rut and a grave are the dimensions.” This makes me wonder, if dentists find themselves in so many daily ruts, why do they keep digging? What’s the cause behind the compulsory attitude and behaviors commonly repeated by dentists that kills their practices, makes them unhappy, and prevents them from living their best life? The answer is easy, albeit a complex issue: Stress.

There are thoughts and behaviors dental professionals have that perpetuate their stress cycle. Identifying these habits and putting a direct stop to them can prevent you from having a long and stressful career. Here are the top 6 things you’re currently doing you need to stop before you dig your own grave.

Lucy Hobbs

She’s a trailblazer who paved the way for women in dentistry, a largely forgotten icon who persevered against long odds.  Today, we at Benco honor Lucy Hobbs, America’s first female dentist, by launching The Lucy Hobbs Project. Born in 1833, Lucy was refused admission to medical school, and then dental school, because of her gender. But she never gave up, eventually learning dentistry as an apprentice, graduating from the Ohio College of Dental Surgery, and becoming the first licensed woman…
