Over the past three years, we have met some incredible women – a 99 year-old dental icon who wrote the “Hygienist’s Bible”, an endodontist who raised nearly $200K+ to provide low cost dental care to those in need while operating a two office practice, and a periodontist that has personally donated $75,000 in scholarships to the Florida State College Dental Hygiene School where she also teaches.
This year is no different! During our 4th annual celebration in June, we will honor six exemplary women who are trailblazers in our industry – a Kois Center mentor, the developer of the Hands-on Learning Lab for children, a retired US Army Colonel, a humanitarian who donates her free time as well as supplies, a clinical assistant professor at Boston University’s dental school since age 25, and a dentist who’s working to bring toxic dental waste back to clean water.
During our celebration we will innovate through new learning! Our keynote speaker Libby Gill will share leadership guidance with attendees to drive passion and productivity in their organizations. Robb Zbierski will present “The Proper Care and Feeding of Your Attitude” which will help attendees learn about the role attitude plays in getting better results…in every aspect of your life; from relationships to business to health & fitness.
We will also give back! In lieu of a fee for our celebration, we ask that attendees bring non-perishable healthy snack items for the National Head Start Association. A list of eligible products will be provided to attendees prior to the event.
This inspiring, two-day program is FREE to attend, however registration is required. We will also offer 1 CE credit for Robb Zbierski’s program. To register, visit:
If you have any questions about our annual celebration, please email Amanda Ankner at aankner@benco.com.
We want to THANK YOU for your continued support of The Lucy Hobbs Project!

DENTAL EXERCISES
One hot topic we came across in 2015 is ergonomics. As more dental practitioners find themselves in pain, we’d like to offer ways to help! In our first “Dental Exercises” post, Dr. Desiree Walker, American Ninja Dentist and guest speaker at our 3rd Annual Celebration, introduces us to the use of gravity boots. Check out her advice!

Dr. Walker - Gravity Boots

“After work, I like to go to the bar and really turn things upside down! Well – I do have fun but this is what I mean.
I actually go to my door frame mounted chin-up bar, strap on my anti-gravity boots and hang!!Why do I do this?

1) Prevent and alleviate back pain. Inversions increases the amount of space between each vertebra, relieving pressure on the ligaments, nerves, and discs. Less pressure = less pain.
2) Resets the Body’s Natural Alignment: No matter how good our posture is, we still contort our bodies all day with dentistry. When the body is inverted, it remains in alignment with gravity. Gravity facilitates it to return to it’s nature form – a soft “S” curve.
3) Just feels good!!! – Like exercise it helps release endorphins ,
just like the ones that give you the “runner’s high.” Inversion does
this by stimulating the circulatory and lymphatic systemicMy routine is to hang from 2 – 5 minutes, but as a beginner, I would start with 30 seconds.” – Dr. Desiree Walker, Guest Contributor

In the spirit of recognizing that all dentists have vibrant lives outside the professional realm, Incisal Edge reporter Liz Diltz recently asked the 2015 Lucy Hobbs Project Award recipients to express their true passions. The magazine then captured them in a series of portraits, which can be viewed in the dental lifestyle publication’s summer edition, Incisal Edge: Summer Edition.
Meanwhile, at the National Museum of Dentistry in Baltimore, at a June 4 reception to launch The Lucy Hobbs Project 3rd Annual Celebration – which honors six exemplary women in dentistry -attendees were invited to share their passions as well (with the help of The Lucy Hobbs Project and Benco Dental teams, and a few whiteboards.)
Dr. Mary Hartigan, the 2014 Industry Icon, shown with her husband Dr. Alan Fetner, classifies her passion as “Family! Work!” Dr. Hartigan attended the festivities with her entire dental team from Jacksonville, Florida.
The themes of gratitude, passion and determination recurred throughout the two-day fete of exemplary women in dentistry, held June 4 and 5 in Baltimore, Maryland. Our third annual event began with the evening at the National Museum of Dentistry and culminated with the recognition of six exemplary women in the dental community. Mentors and students, mothers and daughters, clinicians and their teams were among the 110 attendees networking, sharing experiences and discussing challenges and the transformations they inspire.
During the celebration, we capped off a year of giving back with a $1,000 donation to Dress for Success Baltimore, along with 14 boxes of clothing donated by Benco Dental associates at the company’s home office in Pennsylvania, CenterPoint East. Throughout the year, at our networking events, hundreds of pieces of clothing were collected to support Dress for Success affiliate locations nationwide.
The room resonated with stories of journeys of courage and pioneering spirit, from welcome speaker Desiree Walker, DDS, (a North Carolina dentist known for her multiple appearances on American Ninja Warrior, NBC’s extreme-obstacle competition), and continuing-education presenter and motivational speaker Dave Weber, to keynote speaker Carey Lohrenz, the U.S. military’s first female F-14 Tomcat fighter pilot.
Julie Radzyminski, Benco Dental’s director of business innovation and the coordinator of the Lucy Hobbs Project, had a simple appeal for the attendees: “Let these stories inspire us,” she said.
We also recently launched our newly-designed website. If you haven’t yet, check it out!
So far, it’s been a great 2015! We have more networking events scheduled throughout the remainder of the year (see below for details). And before you know it, it will be time to submit your nominations for the 2016 Lucy Hobbs Project Awards! Check our website for details!
