Asking the Powerful Question – Heather Penny

There is a movement amongst our society for women to ‘lean in’, for girls to accept and love their bodies, for gender equity in higher leadership, and for increased leadership development targeting women.  Certainly within this past decade, there has been a heightening of awareness where communities, groups, and individuals are intentionally shifting to address the question,  “How do we do a better job empowering our girls and women in areas of professional development and leadership equity?”  Furthermore, we are…

My Path to Dentistry – Bret Lesavoy

At the age of 8 I played tennis, enjoyed spending time with my family, attended business events with my Dad, embraced the idea of helping others, and not only enjoyed learning in the classroom but also from my parents. My exposure to the field of dentistry began at the age of 8 when I underwent gingival graft surgery around my lower incisors. It was a frightening experience, however, one that first opened my eyes to healthcare. Today, at the age…

Supportive Fathers by Dr. Lisa Knowles, Intentional Dental Consulting

But, what do Fathers have to do with dentistry, and isn’t this a blog site about women’s advancement? I used to think women’s issues were women’s issues…until I watched the transformation of my own Father. I watched him drop his old school ways of looking at things and even question the cultural norms he grew up with. Last year, Dr. Cheryl Siegel was the keynote speaker for the Lucy Hobbs Project. Although I did not hear her speak personally, I…

To Hashtag or Not to Hashtag? That is the #question

Remember when the only time you would ever press shift+3 was when you would shorthand the word “number”?  Those were the days.  Nowadays, that four-lined symbol resembling a tic-tac-toe board (#) translates to hashtag: a social media phenomenon that helps users search and sort topics.  I am sure you have seen this trend in action at some point [lest we forget the #YOLO craze!] but are you completely familiar with how it works and its immense advantages?  Let’s walk through…

That’s How I Got Here – Meaghan Fadden’s View from Outside

Six months ago, if you had asked me who Lucy Hobbs was, I wouldn’t have had an answer for you.  Not even an educated guess.  I would have Googled her name, briefly read her Wikipedia biography and stored that little nugget of knowledge for a potential Final Jeopardy question. However, that was six months ago; before I started preparing for my first interview at Benco Dental.  I applied for a Project Coordinator position in the Business Innovation department.  I wasn’t…

Lucy Hobbs

She’s a trailblazer who paved the way for women in dentistry, a largely forgotten icon who persevered against long odds.  Today, we at Benco honor Lucy Hobbs, America’s first female dentist, by launching The Lucy Hobbs Project. Born in 1833, Lucy was refused admission to medical school, and then dental school, because of her gender. But she never gave up, eventually learning dentistry as an apprentice, graduating from the Ohio College of Dental Surgery, and becoming the first licensed woman…
